SNAP counts people, not square footage. Your household is everyone who buys and prepares food together — a program definition that often disagrees with a lease or a tax return:
- Counted together: you, your spouse, your children under 22 living with you, and anyone else who shares your groceries and meals — including a partner whose name is nowhere on the lease.
- Separate households: roommates who shop and cook for themselves, even under one roof and one lease.
Gross monthly income means everything before anything is taken out: wages before taxes, self-employment receipts, Social Security, unemployment insurance, and child support you receive.
- List every person who eats food bought with your shared money, with age and relationship
- Pull the last 30 days of pay stubs or benefit letters for each person on the list
- Convert each source to a monthly figure — weekly times 4.33, every two weeks times 2.17
- Total all sources into one gross monthly figure and write it at the top of the roster
