All three tools this playbook relies on — the online application, the intent-to-file record, and the claim-status tracker — sit behind a VA.gov login, and each requires identity verification through Login.gov or ID.me. Verification tells VA that the person filing is you; an unverified account can look around but leaves the claim tools locked.
Start at va.gov and select Sign in. Pick one provider and stay with it — switching mid-process is how duplicate accounts get created.
- On VA.gov’s sign-in page, choose Login.gov or ID.me and create the account with an email address and a strong password.
- Set up a second factor — authenticator app or security key — and store the backup codes somewhere safe.
- Complete identity verification: Social Security number, date of birth, home address, phone number, and a photo-ID scan or knowledge questions if asked.
- Sign out, sign back in to VA.gov, and open your profile to confirm your legal name and verified status display correctly.
