The legal home state decides almost everything downstream: which articles form you sign, what the state charges, how fast it approves, whether a registered agent is mandatory, how many directors state law demands, and what recurring report follows you. All of it is published on each Secretary of State’s business-services pages.
Compare on six lines, state by state:
- Articles form for nonprofit corporations
- Filing fee, plus any expedite option
- Processing time, online versus paper
- Registered agent — required? in-state address?
- Director minimums and independence rules
- Annual or biennial report and its recurring fee
- Open the business-filing page of your home state’s Secretary of State and note the nonprofit articles form and its current fee.
- From the same site, record processing time, registered-agent rule, director minimum, and the recurring annual report.
- Repeat for any other state you are seriously weighing; otherwise note “home state only” and stop.
- Write the state-selection note naming the state, filing office, form, fee, agent rule, and director rule, with a one-line reason.
