This step produces a clear picture of everyone’s medical needs and separates the animals so no further injuries occur. The hardest part is staying calm enough to triage — especially if the other owner is angry or the animals are still agitated.
- Triage people first — check for bleeding, breathing difficulty, or unconsciousness. Call 911 for deep puncture wounds on the face, neck, or torso, or for uncontrolled bleeding.
- Separate the animals using a solid barrier (door, fence panel, large board). Never grab a collar or reach between fighting animals.
- Confine each animal in a separate secure space and check for visible injuries only after they have calmed down.
- If your dog is injured and in pain, create a makeshift muzzle before handling, then transport to a veterinarian. For the other animal, contact the owner or animal control.
- Write down the name, address, and phone number of any hospital or veterinary clinic where anyone receives treatment.
