Identify your resident district and compulsory-age window

There is no national homeschool office. Your state writes the rule, and the resident school district usually administers it — so two facts gate everything else: which district the law treats as yours, and whether your child sits inside the compulsory-attendance window yet.
Find the resident district: search “[your state] school district lookup” on the state education agency site, ask the county clerk or auditor, or read a property tax bill — it names the district. The nearest school building is not proof of residence district; boundary lines split streets.
Find the compulsory-age window: open the same agency’s homeschool or compulsory-attendance page and copy the minimum age, maximum age and entry cutoff date. Massachusetts runs ages 6–16 (DESE Home Schooling); other states start at 5 or 7 and end at 16, 17 or 18.
- Open the state education agency’s district locator and confirm your district from your home address
- Record the district’s legal name, central office phone and email, and the superintendent’s name if posted
- Copy the compulsory-attendance minimum age, maximum age and entry cutoff date from the state agency page
- Compare your child’s age on the cutoff date and mark them inside or outside the compulsory window
