- Map the local demand and the competition2 hours
Build the one-page demand map first. Open a blank sheet with five columns: occasion, neighborhood, rival operator, published price, source. Work the free channels — local Facebook community and parent groups, Nextdoor, school PTA newsletters, event-planner listings — and note every occasion neighbors mention: birthdays year-round, graduations clustering in May and June, school events and winter holidays in between. Mark the neighborhoods where requests concentrate, typically subdivisions with visible front lawns.
Then scan the rivals. Run a Maps and web search for “yard sign rental”, “yard greetings”, and “birthday lawn signs” plus your city name. For every operator, record package names, base prices, add-on fees, delivery charges, the stated service zone, and how recent their activity is — a page whose last post is two years old is not competition. Log sold-out calendars too: they show which weekends book up before you ask anyone anything.
