Verify eligibility gates for Product Hunt, Show HN and target subreddits
Each platform blocks the same product for a different reason. Check the gate before you build assets.
Product Hunt: you must post from a personal account — company accounts cannot hunt or post. New accounts must complete onboarding before the Post button appears. A hunter is not required; Product Hunt recommends makers post their own product.
Show HN: only for a non-trivial thing you personally made that strangers can try right now. Landing pages, sign-up pages, newsletters, lists and fundraisers do not qualify. An incremental feature is not substantive enough; a major overhaul may be.
Launch HN: is YC-only. If you are not YC-funded, use the normal Show HN route.
Reddit: moderators run each community and set its own rules. Most communities do not allow self-promotion. For each target subreddit open the rules panel on the right and the post composer and note account-age, karma, flair, title, link and posting-day gates. Where promotion is ambiguous you will ask moderators later — here just record the gate.
- Confirm your Product Hunt account is personal, complete and onboarded
- Verify the product is personally made, non-trivial and tryable, not a landing page or list
- Decide if change is incremental feature or major overhaul for Show HN
- Confirm YC status to choose Launch HN or normal Show HN route
- For each target subreddit, record age, karma, flair, link and self-promotion rules
