- Walk the property and mark every system component1 hour 30 min
Work from the house outward. Start where the building drain leaves the house — basement floor or crawlspace wall — and follow its path into the yard. The septic tank usually sits within about 30 ft, betrayed by two round lids, plastic risers, or a stripe of unnaturally lush grass. Beyond it lie the drainfield trenches or beds; parallel green bands often trace the lines. The wellhead is a steel or PVC pipe standing a foot or so above grade with a bolted cap, often near a small shelter holding pressure tanks and treatment equipment.
Draw as you walk, mark north, and pace distances heel-to-toe — a pace runs roughly 2.5–3 ft. If any permit copy or disclosure shows a reserve area, hatch that zone on the same sketch: it is the ground a future replacement field depends on.
