Build a 12-month cost plan for a newly diagnosed pet

  1. List every line item from the specialist estimate
    20 min

This step produces a clean, two-column list of every charge on the specialist’s estimate, separated into one-time fees and recurring costs. Line-item amounts are transcribed exactly as written — no rounding, no estimating.

Copy every chargeable item from the written estimate into a spreadsheet or notebook in the exact wording and dollar amount the clinic printed, then split the sheet into two groups.

    One-Time Fees include:

    • Surgery
    • Hospitalization (note the number of days)
    • Diagnostic imaging (MRI, CT, ultrasound)
    • Biopsy and histopathology
    • Emergency examination fee
    • Initial specialist consultation fee

    Recurring Costs include:

    • Prescription medications
    • Prescription diet food
    • Recheck examinations
    • Lab panels (CBC, chemistry panel, urinalysis, T4, SDMA, bile acids)
    • Scheduled procedures such as dental cleaning or tumor aspirates

    Ranges and estimates

    • If a line uses a range (e.g. $800–$1,200), write both numbers and label it as a range.
    • If a line says “estimate only — actual cost may vary,” flag it with an asterisk.

Check the finished list against the printed estimate line by line — wording, amounts, range labels and asterisks — before you use it.

Keep this itemized list as the master reference for every calculation that follows.
