- Verify your HDHP meets IRS minimums15 min
This step produces a yes/no answer: does your health plan qualify as a high-deductible health plan (HDHP) under Internal Revenue Code § 223? If it does not, you cannot contribute to an HSA for any month you were covered by it. The two numbers that matter are the plan’s annual deductible and its maximum out-of-pocket limit.
For 2026, an HDHP must meet or exceed these thresholds:
Minimum deductible Max out-of-pocket Self-only $1,700 $8,500 Family $3,400 $17,000 - Open your plan’s Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) — a 6–8 page PDF on your insurer’s website or your employer’s benefits portal.
- Find the rows labelled “Annual Deductible” and “Maximum Out-of-Pocket.”
- Compare against the table above. Both numbers must equal or exceed the threshold for your coverage tier.
- Confirm you have no other disqualifying health coverage (see callout below).
