Replace Essential Records After a Fire, Flood, or Evacuation

  1. Inventory every lost document by category
    1 hour

Take a sheet of paper or a notes app and write one line for every document the disaster took. Work through the six categories, and mark each line online or not online depending on whether you can start the replacement on a website tonight.

    The six categories

    • Identity root — birth certificates: yours, your spouse's, and each child's.
    • Social Security card — one line per person.
    • Driver's license or state ID — yours plus any other driver in the household.
    • Vehicle records — title, registration, and plates for each vehicle.
    • Insurance documents — declarations pages and policy numbers for homeowners, renters, auto, and any other policy.
    • Property records — the deed and mortgage documents for each property you own.

Keep this list. Every later phase builds on it, and it becomes the tracking log for all your applications.
