The symbol of Paris needs no introduction. Built for the 1889 World's Fair, the 330-metre iron lattice tower still dominates the Paris skyline. Take the elevator (or climb 674 steps to the second floor) for panoramic views of the Seine, Sacré-Cœur, and the entire City of Light. The nightly sparkle show — 20,000 bulbs flashing for 5 minutes every hour after sunset — is pure magic.
You're done when
Photos from the top, a Paris sunset memory, and maybe a crepe from a street vendor at the base.
Tip
Book tickets at toureiffel.paris at least 2 weeks ahead for timed entry. Visit at sunset (book a slot 60 min before sunset) for golden hour over the city, then stay for the sparkle show.
Watch out
The queues for the elevator can exceed 2 hours even with pre-booked tickets. Pickpockets operate in the area. Avoid July-August when crowds are extreme.

The largest amphitheatre ever built (50,000 spectators) once hosted gladiator battles. Today it stands in the heart of modern Rome, its crumbling arches a testament to Roman engineering. Buy the combined ticket that includes the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill — the Forum gives you context for what you're seeing, and the Palatine offers the best view over the Colosseum.
You're done when
A selfie with the Colosseum, a new appreciation for Roman concrete, and exhausted legs from the Forum.
Tip
Buy a combined ticket online at coopculture.it to skip the main ticket queue. The arena floor and underground chambers require a separate guided tour — book it in advance if you want to walk where gladiators stood.
Watch out
Beware of gladiator-costumed performers who charge for photos and then demand payment. The Roman sun is relentless in July-August; carry water and a hat.

A volcanic caldera in the Cyclades, Santorini is the poster child of Greek island beauty — whitewashed villages with blue-domed churches perched on cliffs above a flooded volcano crater. The sunset in Oia draws crowds for good reason, but Fira, Firostefani, and Imerovigli offer equally stunning caldera views with fewer elbows.
You're done when
That iconic blue-dome photo (yours, not someone else's), volcanic sand between your toes, and possibly a bottle of Assyrtiko wine.
Tip
Stay in Fira or Firostefani for caldera views at half the price of Oia. Rent an ATV (€30-40/day) to explore the quieter southern beaches — Red Beach, White Beach, and Akrotiri. The Akrotiri ruins (a Minoan city preserved in volcanic ash) are Santorini's most underrated attraction.
Watch out
Cruise ships disgorge thousands of passengers between 10am and 4pm. The donkey path from the old port is steep, smelly, and best avoided — take the cable car (€6). Prices triple in July-August.
