About this playbook
How to reclaim your attention and do work that matters: schedule focus blocks, kill distractions at the source, train your concentration like a muscle, batch the shallow work, and protect your best hours. A practical, repeatable focus system for a world engineered to interrupt you.

Before you protect your focus, you need to know what deserves it. Deep work is the small slice of high-value work that actually moves the needle — and it's exactly what a distracted day squeezes out.
- 1Name the task you keep dodgingFree preview10 min
Pick one task that would genuinely move your work forward and that you've been avoiding for days. Not the busy stuff — the piece you're paid to do well and keep pushing to 'later'.
Write it on a sticky note and put it where you'll see it first thing tomorrow. This is the first thing you'll defend focus for.
You're done when
One high-value task named and left somewhere visible for tomorrow morning.
Tip
If nothing jumps out, look for the task that gives you a small flinch when you think about it. That flinch is usually the deep work.
- 2Separate deep work from shallow workFree preview40 min
Deep work is the cognitively demanding, high-value work you do without distraction — writing, coding, designing, analyzing.
Shallow work is the logistical stuff that's easy to do half-distracted:
- chat
- admin.
List the tasks that fill a normal week and drop each into one of those two buckets. You can't protect attention until you know what actually deserves it.
- List the tasks that fill your typical week
- Mark each as deep (high-value, focus-heavy) or shallow
- Note which deep tasks you keep postponing
You're done when
Your recurring tasks sorted into deep-work and shallow-work buckets.
Tip
Quick test I use: could a sharp new hire handle this after a few months of training? If yes, it's shallow. Deep work is the part only you can do.
