Replace a Lead Service Line Using Available Public Funding

  1. Locate the service line where it enters your house

    The service line enters your house in the basement, crawl space, utility room or garage, usually on the wall facing the street. Start from the meter and the main shutoff valve — the service line is the pipe that comes through the wall or floor to reach them.

    1. Find your main shutoff valve and the water meter.
    2. Follow the pipe from the meter back toward the outside wall or floor slab.
    3. Clear away boxes, insulation or dust so about 1 foot of pipe is fully visible.
    4. Photograph the pipe with something for scale, and note the room and the date.
