How do I actually know whether my pipe is lead?

Do the scratch-and-magnet test at the entry point: lead is dull gray, soft enough to scratch with a key, and not magnetic; copper is reddish-brown and galvanized steel is magnetic. Then check your utility’s lead service line inventory for your address — the EPA requires utilities to publish these — and ask the utility to confirm. If the record is unclear, a certified first-draw water test gives you a number to act on.

Will I have to pay anything at all?

Often nothing. Federal dollars flow through state programs such as the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund, and many utilities now replace the full line free for eligible customers, including the private side. Some programs are income-based, some replace only the utility’s side, and some reimburse you after the work. I rent — is this something I can do?

Only with the owner’s cooperation, because the line is part of the property. You can request a lead check and replacement through your landlord, and most utilities act only with owner consent. If your landlord refuses, contact your local housing authority or health department — some municipalities require landlords of older housing to address lead service lines — and use a certified lead-reducing filter on your drinking water in the meantime.

Will replacing the line mean my whole yard gets dug up?

Usually a single trench from the street to the house, because the new pipe follows the old line, with one or two pits where the pipe is cut and reconnected. Restoration — reseeding, patching concrete or sidewalk — is sometimes included in the program and sometimes not. Is it safe to drink the water while I wait for replacement?

You can reduce the risk now. Lead leaches most after water sits in the pipe, so run the cold tap until it turns cold before first use, never use hot water for drinking or cooking, and install a filter certified under NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction. Pregnant women and children should not drink unfiltered water while the line is lead. A baseline water test in Phase 1 tells you how urgent your situation is.

What if my utility says the line is not lead but I still doubt it?

Ask for the record behind their answer. Utilities must keep a service line inventory and know which method identified each line; if yours was classified from desk records rather than a physical test, request a verification check, especially before an upcoming street or water main project. In the meantime, treat the water as if it may contain lead and follow the interim steps in Phase 1.
