The catalogue holds hundreds of guides about starting something small. Different authors, completely different businesses — a food truck, a vending route, a home service company, a franchise — and they all open the same way. Not with the company. Not with the name. With a number.
Phase one is never "register the company"
Setting up a U.S. LLC as a non-U.S. founder calls its first phase decide before you spend a dollar — because for a lot of founders the honest answer is that the LLC costs more in annual compliance than it saves, and that is a five-hour question, not a five-hundred-dollar one.
Evaluating a franchise disclosure document does the same thing under time pressure: lock the review window, set your decision rules in advance, and only then read the document. Rules written before the numbers are rules you can still trust after them.
Learn the arithmetic before you need it

The setup cost is not the cost that kills you
Forming a company is cheap almost everywhere. The number that matters is the recurring one: filings, accounting, insurance, licences, rent — what you pay in the months you sell nothing. A home-based service business starts by clearing the address for business use, because zoning and the lease are the constraints that no amount of enthusiasm moves.
Serious guides state both numbers. Weak ones state only the first, because it is the encouraging one.
Permissions run on their own calendar
Local clearances, licences, inspections and insurance certificates each have their own queue, and they do not start when you are ready — they start when you file. The order is paperwork before opening, not after the first inspection.
