Freeze Your Credit at All Three Bureaus Before Thieves Do It for You

All three credit files — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — sit behind a free security freeze, with confirmations, PINs and recovery details stored, protected-consumer freezes filed for any children or dependents, and a working routine for lifting and restoring the freeze when a legitimate application comes along.

Who it's for

US adults who have received a breach notification letter, anyone who wants their identity lend-proofed before a major application, and parents or guardians who want a child’s file locked before a thief invents one. Readers already untangling active fraud should start at IdentityTheft.gov and return here afterwards for prevention.

About this playbook

A security freeze is the strongest free lever US consumers have against someone opening credit in their name: with all three nationwide files locked, a thief’s loan application ordinarily stalls because lenders cannot pull the report. This guide walks the whole job in one sitting — pulling the free reports worth reading first, placing freezes at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion through each bureau’s own portal, adding protected-consumer freezes for children, and learning the temporary-lift routine for the day a real loan or apartment application arrives. Every step ends with something in hand: a saved report, a confirmation number, a PIN, a tracked-mail receipt. Federal law makes placing, lifting, and removing a freeze free at all three bureaus, so the cost is postage at most. It does not unwind identity theft that has already happened beyond pointing to IdentityTheft.gov, and it is upfront about what a freeze cannot stop — misuse of existing accounts, tax-return fraud, and medical identity theft stay on the reader to watch.
