What you need first
You know or can obtain the basics of your case: the court, the offense, the date, and the disposition. You have a state ID, a mailing address, access to a printer or a courthouse, and roughly the money for filing fees and certified copies — or the willingness to file a fee-waiver form. No legal training is required, but you will read your state's statute and follow its forms.
