Common questions
Glossary
- Champ de Mars
- The large public park in Paris on which the Eiffel Tower stands, between the tower base and the Seine. The guide locates the tower there and directs visitors to its lawns, forecourt and Trocadéro viewpoints for access and photos.
- Roman Forum
- The excavated civic and religious centre of ancient Rome, with temples, arches and basilicas beside the Colosseum. The guide presents it together with the Colosseum and Palatine Hill as one combined visit that explains the ancient city.
- Palatine Hill
- The hill above the Roman Forum traditionally regarded as the birthplace of Rome and later the site of imperial palaces. The guide includes it in the combined ticket and notes its terrace gives the best overview of the Colosseum and Forum.
- caldera
- A large basin formed when a volcano collapses after eruption, here flooded by the sea to form a cliff-ringed bay. The guide describes Santorini as villages perched above such a flooded crater, with the caldera view as the defining scenery.
- aurora borealis
- A natural light display of moving coloured curtains and arcs in the night sky at high northern latitudes, also called the northern lights. The Tromsø entry describes it as the main winter draw, visible only on dark, clear nights and never guaranteed.
- KP-index
- A scale of geomagnetic activity used to indicate how likely and how far south the aurora may be seen. The guide tells visitors to check the aurora forecast and KP-index together with the local cloud forecast before a late-night chase.
- travertine
- A pale limestone deposited by mineral-rich water that forms natural dams, ridges and waterfalls. At Plitvice the guide describes sixteen lakes linked by waterfalls built from this rock, crossed by wooden boardwalks.
- Nasrid Palaces
- The group of Islamic royal residences inside the Alhambra at Granada, noted for stucco, tilework, honeycomb ceilings and fountain courts. The guide makes the timed entry to these palaces the strict anchor of the whole visit, with no late admittance.
