Does this guide teach me the engineering content for the PE exam?

No. The guide covers the licensing procedure around the exam — registering through NCEES, scheduling at a Pearson VUE centre, and sitting for it — but it explicitly does not cover exam content preparation or choosing an exam discipline. Use it to get your application and registration done, and pair it with a separate content-prep resource for the engineering material.

How much of this can I do online?

Almost all of it. Creating your NCEES account, submitting official transcripts, linking your FE exam history, requesting references, filing the state application, and registering for the exam all happen through the NCEES portal and online forms. The one step that cannot be done online is the exam itself, which you sit for in person at a Pearson VUE centre.

My degree is not ABET-accredited. Can I still use this guide?

Yes. Building your NCEES Record includes submitting your non-ABET credentials for an NCEES Credentials Evaluation, which is how equivalency to an ABET-accredited degree is demonstrated. The guide takes you through that step as part of the Record, so a non-ABET degree does not stop you at the start.

What does 'progressive responsibility' mean, and why do state boards care about it?

It is the standard state boards use to judge whether your experience qualifies you for a licence: work that grew in responsibility over time. The guide explains what boards look for in experience narratives and shows you how to frame your work history to demonstrate technical independence rather than list duties, including how to review and refine each narrative against board criteria.

What happens if my state board asks for more information after I apply?

The guide covers responding to board requests for information as part of the state application phase, so you have a step to follow instead of guessing. It also starts the application by researching your state board's requirements up front, which reduces the chance of the board coming back with questions in the first place.

What if I do not have licensed PE references lined up?

The guide walks you through selecting and contacting licensed PE references, submitting the reference requests through the NCEES portal, and following up on references that are still pending. What it cannot do is produce the references for you — you need engineers who hold a PE licence and are willing to vouch for your work.
